It’s the most wonderful time of the year…farmer’s market season!!! My weekends will soon be complete with my pit stop to the local market to get my weekly goodies. I subscribe to the Morristown farmers market because it happens to be right up the street. I’m treated to farm fresh fruits and vegetables directly from their sources, fresh baked breads, and chicken straight from the poultry farm; along with other occasional splurges like crisp pickles, homemade pierogis, and gourmet cheeses. It’s a food lover’s dream.
If you’ve been reading the blog for a few months now you’ll notice that there have been a good handful of Asian inspired recipes. I’ve really enjoyed fooling around with these flavor profiles in the kitchen. Once I “discovered” Thai curries and coconut milk my mind has run wild with delicious stir fry ideas, casseroles, and in today’s case noodle dishes.
Here’s another great #TBT recipe. It was last year’s Fourth of July but its perfect for this weekend’s festivities as well. It’s time to display some patriotism for the approaching Memorial Day Weekend. Get those summer parties started with this fun party drink that pays homage to the good ole’ USA and all those who have served us fighting for our freedom. What’s better than sipping on a cold alcoholic beverage while lounging with friends and family? That is freedom at its finest (Well, in my opinion). That is why I am bringing you this Star Spangled Sangria. Its light, it’s refreshing, and of course it’s red, white, and blue!
The beach outings, backyard barbeques, and park picnic time of year has arrived. I cannot believe this weekend kicks off our summer season, and I cannot be more excited for it! Our weekend schedules are about to get packed up with parties. And these parties will most likely be full of beer, burgers, and hotdogs. They are the staples. While I love them all, having them week after week doesn’t do wonders for my healthy eating routine. This summer I hope to share some recipes for you to incorporate into your weekend meals that bring a healthier option to the table.
I’m sure many of you have heard about the growing trend of meal delivery services over the past couple of years. Companies like Blue Apron Meals and Plated have revolutionized this space by bringing fresh ingredients and recipes right to our doorsteps to make their hand-picked dishes . One of my first Behind the Plates posts was actually about Blue Apron Meals and their offerings. And while I think these services are fantastic, I recently discovered another unique approach to meal delivery by a local NJ company that’s on the rise.
Happy Monday everyone! My Paleo challenge has officially ended. You better believe that my first few days of freedom included some carb overloading and dairy indulging. However; all of the “celebratory” meals quickly caught up to me and I honestly missed feeling healthy. That’s not to say I was ready to go back to full time Paleo however; it encouraged me get back to some lighter cooking.
I want to first start this post with some background about the restaurant selection process for who I choose to write about on the blog. For the majority, my reviews and write-ups are “pre-planned” in the sense that I go to the restaurant intending to write a blog post about that particular visit. There are some occasions or experiences that I just want to sit back and truly enjoy without having to think through how I really feel about what I am eating or take the time to take photos. This is not to say that I haven’t had some terrible dining experiences on these times out that I chose not to write about. I also go into all food experiences extremely optimistic. This is just purely my personality. I have a huge passion for food; so the prospect of trying something new or reliving a past gratifying experience at a restaurant is always exciting. The problem arises when I go into a meal with the intention to do a write-up and the experience does not meet that overly optimistic expectation that I had walking into it. I never like writing a bad review. Just like people have bad days, I also believe restaurants can have one too. I don’t want to sum up one bad experience as the end all be all. However; I also believe in being honest and if I didn’t share how I truly felt then there would be no credibility to writing about food. Simply put, not all food is created equal. That being said, I think reviews are simply opinions and unless a repeated pattern of bad reviews tells otherwise (if there is a string of bad reviews about a place, there is a reason) than it should be taken with a grain of salt.

This is one of my favorite days of the year. Who doesn’t love sipping margaritas and munching on Mexican food with friends in celebration? It’s your excuse to party it up during the work week and binge eat tacos and tamales all in the name of the Mexican victory in the Battle of Puebla back in the late 1800s. (This is the origin of the holiday. I am somewhat embarrassed I had to look this up because I did not know the cause for this celebratory day. But, here is you history fun fact of the day!)
Why hello May-you’re here, you’re here, you’re finally here! Can you tell I’m just a little excited for the warm weather arrival?? By the outlook of all the festivals and food truck events this month, it seems like everyone else is just as enthusiastic at the prospect of being outdoors. From border to border NJ is going to be drawing some big crowds and dishing out tons of delicious regional food this month. As usual…get those calendars ready!
