These days food allergies are a dime a dozen. It seems like everyone I know has someone in their fmaily who is dealing with at least 1 food intolerance or allergy. Long gone are the days where kids can bring baked goods, candy etc. into a classroom to share with everyone. I have even seen changes in my corporate office. Everything must be labeled vegan, vegetarian, sugar free, gluten free etc.
More and more companies are cropping up to cater to the ever growing range of allergies as well as the trend to eat cleaner and eliminate certain food groups (ie Paleo, gluten free etc). I find that it is difficult to find food products that meet specific allergy criteria and are also truly tasty. Now that I am on my own gluten free journey I have found that there are some food groups I just haven’t found a good replacement for. Bread for instance, at this point I have chosen to forgo all bread substitutes. I have not found one that really satisfies the craving and actually tastes what it’s worth in calories (feel free to prove me wrong with suggestions!)
The reason I am bringing all of this up is because I found a company that breaks the mold. They cater to allergies AND bring a delicious product to the table.
A few weeks ago I was heading to a birthday party and I was trying to find something, anything, to bring along to eat as a dessert during the cake portion of the celebration. I was at a local specialty food grocer and saw cupcakes that were labeled gluten free from Mo’Pweeze Bakery. I grabbed a chocolate one and ran off to the party. It wasn’t until later that I saw it was also dairy, nut, egg and soy free as well. Needless to say I was a little hesitant to dive into this treat. My thought was that there was no way this cupcake could possibly taste anywhere near good. But, when the cake came to the table and I was practically drooling I had no other choice. (Well there was the choice to eat no cake at all…but that’s really just never an option in my case).
After a cautious first bite I was pleasantly surprised, actually more like astonished, at how good this thing was. I would have eaten it diet or not. It was very moist and a little fudgier than a typical cupcake. But, it truly tasted like a cupcake…the frosting and all. After polishing off my new found dessert substitute, I just had to find out the secret of this bakery. I reached out to Mo’Pweeze Bakery and Christine, the owner, was more than happy to find a time for us to meet up.
The bakery does not have their own storefront shop. They sell directly to stores and you can also order online to be shipped to your house. This made our meet up a bit more complicated. But luck would have it that Mo’Pweeze Bakery was hosting a demo at the MarketPlace at Roxbury in New Jersey. I headed up for an afternoon tasting and chat.
Christine and her husband Adrian gave me some great background on the company as I taste tested (more like stuffed my face) some of the flavors they offer. Christine started the company just under a year ago. She is not a trained baker. Christine started to bake as a result of trying to cater to her family who has quite a handful of allergies. She wanted to give them something they could enjoy so she set out to make banana bread. The problem was she wasn’t getting the perfect result she hoped for. She moved on to achieving this perfection in her original cupcake flavor, banana guava with guava frosting (it’s quite delicious I might add!). She has now added 12 more flavors to her portfolio. I was able to sample 4 of these flavors and I went home with one of each. I also want to add that I shared these purchased cupcakes with some people who do not have any food allergies and they too were amazed at how great these cupcakes were!
I asked Christine for her secret and she shared that all of her ingredients are all natural and the cupcakes are completely homemade. Any fruit flavor that is listed on the package is a puree of organic fruit that she whips up. She does all of this work by hand, and for the most part all on her own!
The cupcakes are great for any crowd. Order some for an upcoming childrens’ party with no fears of kids not being able to partake in the celebration. Mo’Pweeze will also please the adult crowd with their alcohol infused cupcakes featuring gluten free beer, Malibu and red wine.
You can order online or call to make a special request order for an upcoming event. (They ship nationwide!):
I hope you’ll give Mo’Pweeze cupcakes a try. I know I’m glad I did!
