What do you do when it’s the perfect spring day, your agenda is empty and your husband is out golfing? You explore your own city! That’s exactly what I did a few weeks ago. I decided to take a long walk around the center of town and about three hours later I had discovered new shops, indulged in a giant ice cream come from the South Street Creamery, and took in the Morristown green’s budding views. It honestly was the best afternoon I had in a long time.
One of the discoveries I made along the way was Seasons Olive Oil and Vinegar shop. It’s newer to Morristown and it’s essentially a tasting room and gourmet food shop. After letting the sheer amount of silver distilling vats set in, I slowly made my way through the room to start narrowing my tasting options. Because let’s be honest, trying over 50 varieties was probably out of the question after my huge ice cream cone. The store keeper was generously providing bits of knowledge, tasting notes, and recommendations to store guests. If you couldn’t catch the shopkeeper’s attention there were notes and pairings listed above each flavor as well.
I learned that the citrus olive oils were infused directly with the fruits (orange, lemon, lime) for a strong yet, refined flavor. They would be perfect for fish or salads. After a handful of sips and dips I found that the rosemary, porcini, and truffle oils were my favorites. Next up were the balsamic vinegars. The 18 year aged was stellar but I also enjoyed the herb infused and strawberry.
I slowly made my way to the back of the shop where they also had a salts and seasonings taste table. You guys, this is where I fell even more in love. I use at least a pinch of salt in everything I make. With that said, tasting such good quality sea salt along with the flavored options available pumped me up. The Thai Ginger, Rosemary (yes, again…its my favorite herb!) and fleur de sel were the front runners here.
Seasons had everything from handmade pastas, to olive oil and vinegar cruets to dipping bowls and serve ware. If you’re looking for a gourmet gift for your food loving friends, here’s the perfect shop! In the end I scooped up my Thai ginger salt and the Fleur de sel along with the Rosemary olive oil and strawberry vinegar. In the few weeks since my visit I have used each of these numerous times. Season’s products are not the kind of gourmet gifts that sit in your pantry and get lost. They are versatile, great quality, and most of all, tasty.
For all you locals out there, I encourage you to take an afternoon for yourself. Walk around town, buy yourself a treat, and stop in for a tasting and education at Seasons.
I promise it will be a fun day.
…all for the love of the dish
